Speculating in Sports
By JOHN WHITAKER
AlmanacSports.com publisher note: Parts not relating to the 1935
prep football season have been omitted.
The state high school football "championship" trophy has been awarded to Evansville Memorial by
Dick Miller, Indianapolis Times scribe. . . . Hammond and Mishawaka—and Lowell—all were given
"serious consideration" for the "state championship," as were New Albany, Garfleld, of Terre Haute,
Fort Wayne Central and Indianapolis Shortridge. . . . The irony of it all is that Evansville Memorial
refused to play Hammond High—here or there—in a North-South game that might have brought the
"championship" picker closer to a valid decision. . . . Incidentally, five of the nine "championships" awarded
by Mr. Miller have gone to downstate teams.. . . Which is okeh up here. . . . The N. I. H. S. C.
wiil play the football and furnish the colleges with varsity players and allow the "championship"
trophies to go elsewhere.
